AEO Consultant for Law Firms: Answer Engine Optimization for Lawyers

To get a law firm recommended when people ask ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews for a lawyer, I make the firm’s facts easy to find and the same everywhere: a clear page for each practice area, named lawyers with credentials you can show, reviews where your rules allow, matching listings and directory profiles, and LegalService schema.

I am Memona, an answer engine optimization (AEO) consultant. Law firms hire me to find out what AI tools tell prospective clients about them, then fix the gaps. You work with me directly, and your compliance partner has the final say on everything that gets published.

What does AI look at before it recommends a law firm?

When someone asks an AI tool for a lawyer, the answer is built from what is written about firms across the web: their own websites, their listings, their reviews, the legal directories and what other sites say about them. Legal help is a high-trust topic, so the safest approach is to give AI facts it can check rather than claims it has to take on trust. These are the six areas I look at first when a firm hires me.

Practice-area pages with clear answers

One page for each area of law you actually practise, such as employment, family, conveyancing or commercial disputes. Each one opens with a plain answer to the question a client asks: what you help with, who you act for and how to get in touch. A single services page with one line per area gives AI very little to quote.

Named lawyers with credentials you can show

A people page that names each lawyer, with their practice areas, qualifications and admission details the firm can show, and a link to the public register where your bar or law society publishes one. Real people with details anyone can check are easier for AI to trust than a line about an experienced team.

Reviews and replies, within your rules

Recent, genuine reviews on your Google Business Profile and the directories clients read, with a reply where your local rules allow one. A safe reply thanks the reviewer without confirming they are a client or saying anything about their matter. I never buy, gate or script reviews.

The same facts on every listing

Your firm name, offices, opening hours and practice areas should match on Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places and the legal directories clients use in your country. When these disagree, AI has to choose between versions of your firm, and it can choose the wrong one.

LegalService schema on your own site

Structured data that labels the firm as a LegalService, with your offices, hours and the lawyers who work there, plus FAQ markup that matches the questions on the page. Schema.org now points firms to LegalService rather than the older Attorney type. Schema does not earn a recommendation by itself. It helps your facts get read correctly.

Crawler access

AI search tools can only use pages they can reach. Security plugins and firewalls, common on law firm sites, sometimes block crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot without anyone noticing. I check your robots.txt file and server responses, so the pages you have written can actually be read.

If you would rather work through these signals with your own team, I explain each one in more depth in my guide to AEO for law firms. This page is about hiring me to do it with you.

How can a partner test what AI says about the firm in 10 minutes?

You do not need a tool or an agency for a first look. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Google on your phone, and ask each one the question a prospective client in your city would ask.

  1. 1

Ask ChatGPT like a new client

Type the question a prospective client would ask, using your city and a practice area you cover, for example: which employment lawyer in my city should I speak to about unfair dismissal? Note whether the firm is named and the reason given.

  2. 2

Ask Gemini to describe the firm

Ask Gemini the same question. Then ask it for your firm's offices, practice areas and the names of your partners, and compare every detail with what is true today.

  3. 3

Search Google for an AI Overview

Search Google for the same question. If an AI Overview appears at the top, note which firms it names and which websites and directories it links to as sources.

  4. 4

Repeat for a second practice area

Run the three checks again for another practice area. Firms are often visible for one area of law and missing for the rest, and that gap is useful to know.

Write down three things: whether the firm is named, whether the details about it are right, and which sources the answer leans on. Answers change with the person asking, their location and the day, so run the test more than once. If the firm is missing, or a partner who has left the firm is still listed, that is where the work starts.

If you would rather I run it properly, across more questions, practice areas and all four engines, request a free audit and I will send you what I find.

What does working with me include?

Every engagement starts with scope, not a package. On the first call I look at your website, your listings and the questions clients ask about your practice areas, and tell you plainly whether AI search is worth your money right now. If it is, this is what the work looks like. The method is the one I describe on my page about what an answer engine optimization consultant does, applied to a law firm.

Deliverables

A written baseline of what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews say about your firm, with the prompts used. A fix list for your site and listings, in priority order. Answer-first drafts of your key practice-area and people pages. Schema and crawler-access changes, made directly or handed to your web developer.

Cadence

A kickoff call with the partner who owns marketing, then a written plan within the first two weeks. After that, a monthly cycle: changes shipped, prompts re-tested, next priorities agreed. Drafts go to your compliance partner before anything is published.

Reporting

One plain-English monthly report: which prompts now name your firm, what changed on your site and listings, and the enquiries you can trace through your own forms and analytics. No made-up scores, and I never need access to client files or matter data.

Not ready for an ongoing engagement? The AI visibility audit is a one-off review of what AI engines say about your firm and why, with a fix list you can hand to your own team or agency.

How is an AEO consultant different from a legal-marketing agency?

Legal-marketing agencies do useful work, and some firms need exactly what they offer: a team, a content calendar, paid ads and web design under one roof. I am one person, and I do one part of the job. Here is the honest comparison, so you can decide which fits your firm, or whether you need both.

AEO consultant (me)Legal-marketing agency
Who does the workThe person you speak to, every timeA team, often with an account manager in between
ScopeThe AI search layer: facts, answer-first pages, schema, crawler access, mentionsUsually wider: website, content volume, ads, social
CapacityLimited, so I take on a small number of firms at a timeCan produce more content and handle many offices at once
TermsScoped on the call, no lock-in contractsVaries by agency, so ask before you sign
Best fitA firm that wants a named owner for AI search and a written planA firm that wants one supplier for all of its marketing

Many firms keep their agency and bring me in for the AI search side. I give the agency a written brief, so nothing clashes and nobody duplicates work.

Is AEO for lawyers different from law firm SEO or GEO?

It builds on SEO. Law firm SEO is about ranking in Google’s results and map pack when someone searches for a lawyer by practice area and city. Answer engine optimization is about being the firm an AI answer names when the client asks a question instead of scrolling a list. Generative engine optimization for lawyers is another name for much the same work. Most of the groundwork is shared: an accurate Google Business Profile, genuine reviews and clear practice-area pages serve all three.

My page on SEO for law firms covers the Google side. If your firm is in London, my guide on how to rank a law firm in London walks through practice-area and borough targeting step by step.

How do legal advertising rules fit into the work?

The rules on how lawyers can advertise, describe their expertise, mention past matters and use client reviews differ from country to country, and often between bars or law societies in the same country. I am not a lawyer and I do not give legal or regulatory advice.

So the process is simple. At the start, you tell me which rules apply to your firm. I write within them, avoid outcome claims and words such as “specialist” or “expert” unless you confirm the firm may use them, and send every draft to your compliance partner, who signs it off before it goes live. The firm stays responsible for what it publishes, and I build that review step into the monthly cycle.

Who is this for, and who is it not for?

A good fit

  • Small and mid-sized firms with a working website and a clear set of practice areas.
  • Managing partners and marketing leads who want to know what AI tells prospective clients about the firm.
  • Firms with a web developer or legal-marketing agency who want a specialist for the AI search side.
  • Firms with a compliance partner who can review drafts on a regular cycle.

Not a good fit

  • Anyone who wants a guaranteed spot in AI answers. Nobody can honestly promise that, and I will not.
  • Firms that want bought, gated or incentivised reviews.
  • Content that promises case outcomes or claims a status the firm cannot show.
  • Legal or regulatory advice. I am not a lawyer.

Hiring an AEO consultant for your law firm, answered

How do I get my law firm recommended by ChatGPT?
Give ChatGPT consistent facts it can find and check: a clear page for each practice area, named lawyers with credentials, genuine reviews, the same details on every listing and directory, and LegalService schema on your site. ChatGPT also draws on what other sites say about you. Nobody can promise a mention, but these are the inputs you control.
What is answer engine optimization for lawyers?
Answer engine optimization for lawyers is the work of getting a law firm named, accurately, when people ask AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews for legal help. It builds on law firm SEO, with more weight on answer-first pages, checkable lawyer credentials and consistent facts across the web.
Do law firms need LegalService schema?
It helps, but it is not a shortcut. LegalService schema tells search engines and AI tools, in a structured way, what your firm is, where its offices are, when it is open and who works there. It works best when it matches what your pages and listings already say. Wrong or inflated schema can do more harm than none.
Can my law firm reply to online reviews?
That depends on the rules that apply to your firm, which differ by country and by bar, so your compliance partner decides. Where replies are allowed, I draft short ones that thank the reviewer without confirming they are a client or discussing their matter. I never buy, gate or script reviews, and I would not advise you to.
Does AEO replace law firm SEO or our legal-marketing agency?
No. Answer engine optimization builds on SEO rather than replacing it, and most of the groundwork is shared. Many firms keep their legal-marketing agency for the website, content volume and paid ads, and bring in a specialist for the AI search side. I am happy to work alongside your agency and hand changes to your developer.
Do you work with law firms outside the UAE?
Yes. I am based in Dubai and work with firms in other countries over video calls, shared documents and your own analytics. Legal advertising rules differ by country and bar, so at the start I ask which rules apply to your firm, and your compliance partner signs off every page before it goes live.
