How to Track AI Search Visibility (and What to Measure)
A measurement-first guide to tracking AI search visibility: the exact KPIs, free and paid tools, and a copy-able monthly tracking table for ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.

To measure AI search visibility, run a fixed set of buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews on a schedule, then record three things: whether your brand is mentioned, whether you're cited as a source, and your share of voice versus competitors. Tools automate it; the discipline is the monthly cadence.
Most "how to rank in AI search" advice tells you what to publish. Almost none tells you how to know if it worked. This guide fixes that. Below are the KPIs that actually matter, the free and paid tools that capture them, and a tracking table you can copy into a spreadsheet today.
How do you measure if your business shows up in AI search?
You measure it by testing, not guessing. Pick 20–50 prompts a real buyer would type, run each through the major AI engines, and log the result. Unlike Google rankings, AI answers are generative and non-deterministic, so the same prompt can return a different answer twice. That means single checks are meaningless. You need a representative prompt set, tested repeatedly, scored consistently.
For each prompt, record three layers of visibility:
- Mention — is your brand named anywhere in the answer? (Awareness)
- Citation — are you listed as a linked source the AI pulled from? (Authority)
- Recommendation — does the AI actively suggest you, ideally first or in a shortlist? (Intent)
A brand can be mentioned without being cited, and cited without being recommended. Tracking all three tells you whether you're a footnote or the answer. This is the core of answer engine optimization, and it's why a flat "are we in AI search?" question is the wrong one.
What is AI share of voice and how do you calculate it?
AI share of voice (SOV) is the percentage of your tracked prompts where your brand appears, relative to the total opportunity or to competitors. It's the single best summary metric for proving AEO progress over time.
There are two practical ways to calculate it:
Brand presence rate (simplest):
AI SOV = (Prompts where you're mentioned ÷ Total prompts tested) × 100
If you appear in 18 of 40 prompts, that's a 45% presence rate.
Competitive share of voice (more useful):
Competitive SOV = (Your mentions ÷ Total brand mentions across all competitors) × 100
If across 40 prompts there are 100 total brand mentions and 25 are yours, your competitive SOV is 25%. This version is the one to show a client or boss, because it's relative and it moves as you win ground from rivals.
Weight it if you want extra rigor: a first-position recommendation should count more than a buried mention. A simple scoring model: recommendation = 3 points, citation = 2, mention = 1. Sum your points, divide by the maximum possible, and you get a quality-adjusted visibility score.
Which tools track ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews citations?
There's now a real tooling market for this, plus free methods that cost only your time. Use the comparison below to pick a starting point. Prices and features shift fast in this category, so verify current specs before you commit.
| Tool / method | What it tracks | Cost tier | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual prompt testing | Mentions, citations, recommendations (any engine) | Free | Solo founders, first audit, sanity-checking paid tools |
| Profound | Brand visibility & citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Overviews | Paid (enterprise) | Larger brands needing dashboards |
| Otterly.ai | AI search rank, mentions, links across major engines | Paid (entry-level) | SMBs starting structured tracking |
| Peec AI / Scrunch AI | Share of voice, competitor benchmarking | Paid | Agencies tracking multiple clients |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | AI Overview & AI mention monitoring | Paid (add-on) | Teams already on Ahrefs |
| Semrush AI Toolkit | AI visibility & prompt tracking | Paid (add-on) | Teams already on Semrush |
| Google Search Console | Clicks/impressions from AI Overviews (blended into web report) | Free | Confirming AI-influenced traffic |
| Server log / GA4 referral check | Crawls from GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot; referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai | Free | Verifying AI engines crawl and send traffic |
Two free signals worth wiring up immediately. First, check your referral traffic in GA4 for sources like perplexity.ai, chatgpt.com and gemini.google.com — that's AI search sending real visitors. Second, check your server logs for AI crawler user-agents; if GPTBot and PerplexityBot aren't fetching your pages, you can't be cited. (Both points are covered in our SEO audit process.)
A note on the numbers behind all this: Gartner has projected that traditional search engine volume could drop meaningfully by 2026 as users shift to AI assistants, and various industry analyses suggest Google's AI Overviews now appear on a large and growing share of informational queries. Treat any specific figure as a directional estimate — the trend matters more than the decimal.
What's the repeatable monthly tracking process?
Visibility tracking only works if it's boring and consistent. Here's a process you can run in under two hours a month.
- Lock your prompt set. Build 20–50 prompts across the buyer journey: problem-aware ("how do I get cited by ChatGPT"), solution-aware ("best AEO agency for SaaS"), and branded ("is SEO Miss any good"). Don't change this set month to month, or you lose comparability.
- Run each prompt through every target engine. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Copilot if relevant. Use a clean session or logged-out mode to reduce personalization bias.
- Score each result. Log mention / citation / recommendation, plus which competitors appeared and the source URLs the AI cited.
- Calculate the metrics. Presence rate, competitive SOV, and your quality-adjusted score.
- Note the citation sources. If AI keeps citing Reddit, G2, or a competitor's comparison page, that's your next content and digital-PR target.
- Log it and compare to last month. One row per month per metric. Trend lines, not snapshots.
This cadence is built directly into how we run done-for-you SEO and SEO strategy engagements, so reporting is never a scramble.
How often should you audit AI search visibility?
Track core metrics monthly; run a deep audit quarterly. Monthly catches movement and proves momentum to stakeholders. The quarterly deep dive is where you refresh the prompt set, re-check which sources AI engines favor, and reassess competitors who may have entered the picture. Spot-check after any major content push or product launch — but resist daily checking, because the non-deterministic noise will drive you mad and tell you nothing.
What KPIs prove AEO is working to a client or boss?
Lead with outcomes, support with visibility. Here's the reporting stack, ordered from "executives care" to "specialists care":
- AI-referred traffic and conversions — visitors and leads arriving from AI engines (GA4). This is the revenue line.
- Competitive share of voice — your slice of AI mentions versus rivals, trended monthly.
- Citation rate — % of prompts where you're a linked source, not just named.
- Recommendation rate — % where the AI actively suggests you in a shortlist.
- Presence rate — % of prompts mentioning your brand at all.
- Source coverage — how many third-party pages (reviews, roundups, your own pages) AI pulls from when answering your category.
The trap to avoid: reporting visibility as a vanity metric divorced from money. A rising SOV that doesn't move traffic or pipeline needs a closer look at intent and conversion, not a victory lap. Tie every visibility gain back to leads — that's the SEO Miss rule, whether you're a SaaS company or a law firm.
Your copy-able monthly tracking table
Paste this into a spreadsheet and fill one row per month. Add a tab listing every prompt and its per-engine score, and you have a full AI visibility system. The two filled rows below are illustrative sample numbers, not real results — they show what a populated tracker looks like. Replace them with your own.
| Month | Engines tested | Prompts | Presence rate | Competitive SOV | Citation rate | Recommendation rate | AI-referred sessions | AI-referred leads | Top sources AI cited | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example — Month 1 | ChatGPT, Perplexity, AIO | 40 | 45% | 22% | 18% | 10% | 60 | 3 | G2, Reddit, own blog | Win G2 reviews |
| Example — Month 2 | ChatGPT, Perplexity, AIO | 40 | 52% | 26% | 25% | 15% | 95 | 5 | Own blog, G2 | Build comparison page |

Start measuring before you optimize
You can't improve what you don't track, and AI search rewards brands that treat visibility as a managed metric rather than a happy accident. Set your prompt list, pick one tool or run it free, and log your first month. Next month you'll have a trend — and a trend is an argument.
