AI or Google Says Your Business Is Closed When It Isn’t? Here Is How to Fix It

AI says your business is closed because a source it trusts says so: usually your Google Business Profile, a duplicate listing at an old address, or an old directory entry. I find that source and correct it first, then make your website, listings and schema all say you are open, and re-test the answers.

The causes

Why does AI think my business is closed?

AI does not decide you are closed on its own. It repeats a closed status it found somewhere, or borrows one from a business that looks like yours. These are the six sources I check, roughly in order of how often they turn out to be the cause. A closed status is one kind of error; my guide to fixing wrong AI information about your business covers the rest.

  • Your Google Business Profile, or a duplicate of it, is marked closed. Someone picked “permanently closed” or “temporarily closed” by mistake, a stranger’s suggested edit was accepted, or an old duplicate profile carries the closed status. Google Maps shows this label to everyone, and Google’s AI answers often repeat it.
  • You moved, and the old address was closed. Closing the old location is right, but if the listing at your new address is weak or missing, AI finds the closure first and stops there.
  • Old directory listings. Directories and data aggregators copy each other. One that marked you closed, or never heard that you moved, keeps passing that status on.
  • A closed business with a similar name. If a business with a name like yours shut down in your city or your category, AI can attach its closure to you.
  • News or review sites say closed. A local news story, a review site or a forum thread about a closure, a renovation or a move can be read as closed for good.
  • Stale model memory. A model’s built-in knowledge stops at its training cutoff. If you were closed, or reported closed, around then, answers that do not search the web can keep repeating it.

How do I check what AI says about my business right now?

This takes about a minute. Open a private or logged-out browser window, so your own history does not shape the answers, and screenshot each result with the date showing.

  1. ChatGPT. Ask “Is [your business name] in [your city] open, and what are its opening hours?” If the answer cites sources, open each one.
  2. Gemini. Ask exactly the same question, word for word, so you can compare the answers fairly.
  3. Google AI Overviews. Search “[your business name] [your city] opening hours”. Read the AI Overview if one appears, and the business panel beside or above the results.
  4. Google Maps. Search your business name. Look for a red “Permanently closed” or “Temporarily closed” label, then scroll for a second listing under your name, an old name or an old address.

If only Google’s answers say closed, start with your Business Profile. If every tool says it, the closed status has probably spread to directories or articles as well, so expect more of the steps below.

Where did AI get the idea that I am closed?

Match what you saw in your check to a row below. The middle column is where I would look first.

How do I fix it, step by step?

Work in this order. It starts with the source AI is most likely copying and ends with your own site, so each step gives the next one something true to agree with.

  1. Google Business Profile first. Sign in and check that your business status says open, then confirm your regular hours and any special hours. If a suggested edit from a stranger marked you closed, correct it and check the profile again over the next few days, because edits can come back. My Google Business Profile guide covers the rest of the profile.
  2. Hunt down duplicates. Search Google Maps for your name, any old names and any old addresses. If a second listing exists, report it as a duplicate in Google Maps, or ask Business Profile support to merge it with your live profile.
  3. Apple Maps. Claim your place card through Apple Business Connect and confirm it shows you as open with current hours. People who open Maps on an iPhone see this listing, not Google’s.
  4. Bing Places. Claim or update your listing in Bing Places for Business. It feeds Bing search and the answers built on Bing, and it is one of the quicker listings to fix.
  5. Yelp and the main directories. Update Yelp, Facebook, any industry directories and the main directories in your country. Use exactly the same name, address, phone number and hours on each one. Here is how I approach keeping your listings consistent across the web.
  6. Your own website. Show your opening hours as plain text on your home or contact page, not only inside an image. Add LocalBusiness schema with OpeningHoursSpecification, matching your Business Profile exactly. Remove any old “we have moved” or “closing down” notice that is still live.
  7. Re-test. Run the 60-second check again with the same questions and compare it with your first screenshots. AI answers vary between runs, so look for the same answer across several days, not one lucky result.

How long until AI says I am open again?

Honestly, it varies, and I will not give you a date. Google Maps usually reflects a corrected Business Profile first. Answers that search the web as they respond, such as Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT when it browses, can change once the sources they read have been updated and crawled again.

What a model learned during training is slower. An old closed status can keep appearing in answers that do not search until a later version of the model is released. Fixing every source now means that, when it does update, there is nothing left that says closed.

When should you get help?

Plenty of owners fix this themselves with the steps above. It is worth getting help when your Business Profile says open but AI still says closed, when you cannot find where the closed status comes from, when AI keeps mixing you up with another business, or when customers are telling you they thought you had shut.

That is the work I do. I run the questions across the main AI tools, trace the closed status to each source, fix your profile, listings, site and schema, then re-test until the answers line up. It starts with an AI visibility audit. If you would rather start with a wider look at your website, ask for a free SEO audit instead.

FAQ

“Permanently closed” errors, answered

Short answers to what owners ask me most when AI or Google says they have closed.

Why does Google say my business is permanently closed when it isn't?
Usually because your Business Profile, or a duplicate of it, carries a closed status. That can come from a mistaken click, a stranger’s suggested edit that Google accepted, or an old listing at a previous address. Sign in to your profile, set it back to open, then search Google Maps for duplicates and report them.
Can a duplicate Google listing make AI think my business is closed?
Yes. If an old or duplicate listing for your business is marked closed, Google Maps and AI tools can show that status instead of your live profile, or mix the two together. Search Maps for your name, old names and old addresses, then report each duplicate or ask Business Profile support to merge it.
Will reporting the wrong answer in ChatGPT or Gemini fix it?
Report it, because it costs nothing, but do not stop there. Feedback is a note to the AI company, not an edit to your listing. If your Business Profile, directories or old articles still say closed, the same answer can come back. Correcting those sources is what changes the answer over time.
I moved to a new address. Why does AI say my business closed?
Usually because the listing at your old address was closed and AI found that before it found your new location. Where you can, update the address on your existing profile instead of opening a new one. Then update your website and every directory, so the closed status stops appearing wherever AI looks.
Should I mark my business temporarily closed on Google during a renovation?
If you are really closed for a while, yes, because a locked door is worse than a missing listing. Set a reminder to switch it back the day you reopen. If you are only closed for a day or two, use special hours instead, since a forgotten temporary closure is an easy error to make.
Do I need schema on my website to show my business is open?
It helps, but it is not the first fix. LocalBusiness schema with OpeningHoursSpecification gives search engines and AI tools your hours in a structured form, and it should match your Business Profile exactly. Visible opening hours in plain text matter just as much, because many AI tools read the page text.
