AI Has Wrong Information About Your Business? Here Is How to Fix It
AI tools repeat what they find in their sources, so the fix is to correct the sources, not argue with the chatbot. I find where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews got the wrong fact, fix your website, Google Business Profile and listings so they agree, then re-test until the answers change.

Why does AI get facts about my business wrong?
AI does not invent your opening hours out of nowhere. It repeats an old fact, picks between facts that disagree, or borrows facts from a business that looks like yours. These six causes cover almost every wrong answer I see. If you suspect the last one, read how to check whether your site blocks AI crawlers.
- Training data lag. A model's built-in knowledge stops at a cutoff date, so a move, a rebrand or a new opening after that date can be missing until a later version.
- Conflicting sources. Your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories say different things, so AI picks one of them, or blends them.
- Stale directory listings. Old listings on directories and data aggregators keep an old address, old hours or a closed status alive long after you changed it.
- Google Business Profile errors. Wrong hours, a wrong primary category, a duplicate profile, or a profile marked closed tend to show up first in Google AI Overviews and Gemini.
- Entity confusion. A business with a similar name, in the same city or category, gets mixed up with yours, and AI attaches its facts to you.
- Blocked crawlers. Your robots.txt or firewall stops AI crawlers from reading your site, so the tools fall back on older third-party pages about you.
How do I check what AI says about my business?
You can run this test yourself today. It takes a short sitting, needs no tools, and gives you the evidence you need to fix the problem or to brief someone else.
- Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google in a private or logged-out window, so your own history does not shape the answer.
- Ask each one the same five questions: what is [your business], is [your business] open and what are its hours, where is [your business] located, what services does [your business] offer, and who is the best [your service] in [your city].
- Write down every wrong fact word for word, and take a dated screenshot of it.
- Note any source the answer cites or links to. That link is often exactly where the error lives.
- Search your business name on Google and check your Business Profile and the listings on the first two pages. Compare each one with the wrong answer.
- Run the questions again on another day. AI answers vary between runs, so one odd answer matters less than the same wrong fact every time.
Once you have the list, the AI Visibility Checklist walks through the signals AI relies on, in order of impact.
How do I fix each type of wrong answer?
Match what AI is saying to the row below. The middle column is where I look first, and the last column is what changes the answer. Most fixes start with your Google Business Profile and consistent listings across the web.
| What AI says | Likely source | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Says you are permanently closed | Business Profile marked closed, a duplicate profile at an old address, or a directory that never heard you moved | Check your Business Profile status, merge or remove duplicates, correct the directories, and make sure your website shows current opening hours. My step-by-step guide for when AI says your business is closed walks through each one. |
| Wrong opening hours | Business Profile hours or holiday hours, social profiles, older directory listings | Set regular and special hours in your Business Profile, then match them on your website, in your schema and on every listing. |
| Wrong services | Old service pages, a wrong Business Profile category, outdated directory descriptions | Publish one clear page per service, set the right categories and services in your Business Profile, and update listing descriptions. |
| Wrong location or address | Old address in citations and data aggregators, an old listing after a move | Update your name, address and details everywhere, close the old listing properly, and keep the address identical on your site and in schema. |
| Confused with another business | A similar name in the same city or category, and thin or inconsistent details about you | Make your entity unmistakable: a strong About page, Organization schema with links to your real profiles, and the same description everywhere. |
| Outdated information (old name, old owner, old offers) | Old pages still live, old articles, abandoned social profiles | Update or redirect old pages, refresh or close old profiles, and ask publishers to update articles that are out of date. |
| Names a competitor instead of you | The competitor has more consistent mentions, more reviews and clearer answer-first pages | Run a side-by-side check of what AI finds about them and about you, then close the gap on mentions, reviews and page structure. If AI names you for nothing at all, start with why AI is not recommending your business. |
What about the feedback buttons? Use them, but treat them as a note to the AI company, not a correction. If your sources still disagree, the wrong answer tends to come back. Fixing the source is the part that lasts.
How long until AI shows the right information?
Honestly, it varies, and anyone who gives you a fixed date is guessing. Answers that search the web as they respond, such as Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT when it browses, can update once the sources they read have changed and been crawled again. What a model learned during training can lag behind until a later version is released, so an old fact may keep appearing in answers that do not search.
That is why I do not promise a timeline. I fix the sources, record the exact questions and answers before and after, and re-test on a set cadence so you can see what has changed for yourself.
When should you get help?
Plenty of owners fix this themselves with the steps above. It is worth getting help when the wrong answer survives a corrected Business Profile, when you cannot find where the error comes from, when AI keeps mixing you up with another business, or when customers are turning up at the wrong time or the wrong place.
That is the work I do. I run the questions across every major AI tool, trace each wrong fact to its source, fix your site, schema and Business Profile, clean up the listings, and re-test until the answers line up. It starts with an AI visibility audit, so you see the full picture before anything changes. It is one part of answer engine optimization.
